PURPOSE:To obtain a magneto-optical element material capable of reducing the temperature coefficient of Faraday rotation (alpha) to zero or almost zero in spite of a single-layer structure of a magnetic garnet single crystal, by using Tb and/or Dy, a rare earth element, Bi and O at specific molar ratios. CONSTITUTION:The magneto-optical element material of the present invention is a magnetic garnet single crystal having the composition of formula. The material of the formula is a Bi-substituted Tb and/or Dy-iron garnet single crystal having a Bi content (x) of 0.35<=x<=0.45. Accordingly, the temperature coefficient (alpha) of Faraday rotation can be decreased to almost zero at room temperature or thereabout. Furthermore, an element can be produced without preparing two kinds of magnetic garnet films having respective specific thicknesses necessary in the production of a conventional element having double- layer structure and the process for the growth and processing of crystal can be decreased to half.
