PURPOSE:To obtain a compound which is used as an antistatic, dispersant, coagulant or the like, in a shortened time in high yield by reaction of an alkali metal salt of a specific hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid or a mixture thereof with (meth)acrylic acid. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal salt of hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid containing, as an impurity, less than 3mol.% of sulfate group based on the hydroxyalkanesulfonate group, or a mixture thereof with hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid is allowed to react with (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of a protonic acid catalyst. The reaction is carried out at 80-180 deg.C, as the water formed by reaction is azeotropically distilled off together with a solvent such as toluene or xylene, the reaction mixture is neutralized, when needed, to give the subject substance of the formula (R<1> is H, methyl; R<2> is 2-4C alkylene; M is alkali metal).
