PURPOSE:To obtain a stencil paper excellent in durability of s coated layer of a polymer, less liable to cause fogging of a printed matter and favorable in plate wear characteristics, by providing a coated polymer layer comprising cellulose acetate butyrate as a thermal stencil layer on one side of a porous film material. CONSTITUTION:A porous film material is filled with water, and then a solution of cellulose acetate butyrate in an organic solvent incompatible with water is applied thereto. The solution is formed into a layer shape without permeation into pores, and upon the subsequent drying, a uniform coated polymer layer can be provided on the surface of the film material. The polymer layer has an extremely small thickness of not more than 2 mum, usually 0.1-1.5 mum, and is free of defects such as fish eye. The porous film material may be, for example, a paper made from natural fibers, synthetic fibers or a mixture thereof, or a nonwoven fabric. Cellulose acetate butyrate preferably has an acetyl content of 1-15 wt.% and a butyryl content of 20-60 wt.%. Cellulose acetate butyrate may be provided as the coated layer on one side of the porous film material, and various additives may be incorporated therein, as required.
