PURPOSE:To easily determine dot area rates and to exactly execute the control and prediction of colors of printed matter by calculating the dot area rates in accordance with specific conditions from the tristimulus values corresponding to the reflection colorimetry and transmission colorimetry of the solid density parts of the printed matter and the tristimulus values of paper. CONSTITUTION:The solid density parts of yellow, magenta, and cyan of the dot color printed matter are subjected to reflection colorimetry to determine the tristimulus values XSR, YSR, ZSR. The tristimulus values XST, YST, ZST by transmission colorimetry are similarly determined. The area rates a, b satisfying the equation I to minimize the errors between the estimated tristimulus values and the actually measured tristimulus values Xt, Yt, Zt in the section where the dot area rates a, b on the left side of the equation I are desired to be determined are determined in accordance with the equation I. The area rates a, b are otherwise determined as the average values of the three solutions based on the equation II.
