PURPOSE:To provide an aromatic polyester or an aromatic polyesteramide excellent in mechanical strength, heat resistance and molding properties, which comprises five or six specified types of units in a predetermined proportion. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyester (A) comprises units represented by formulae I-V respectively with unit I being 40-70mol.%, unit II being 1-8mol.%, unit III + unit IV being 6-36mol.% and unit V being 10-40mol.% provided that the molar ratio of unit III to (unit III + unit IV) is 0.1-0.8. An aromatic polyesteramide (B) comprises units represented by formulae I-VI respectively with unit I being 40-70mol.%, unit II being 1-8mol.%, unit III + unit IV being 6-36%, unit V being 10-40mol.%, and unit VI being 0.1-10mol. provided that the molar ratio of unit III to (unit III + unit IV) is 0.1-0.8. This aromatic polyesteramide (B) is an aromatic polyester of which anisotropy is reduced while keeping the properties of the above aromatic polyester (A) retained.
