PURPOSE:To permit a ship to be modified with no necessity for using a dock or the like, by vertically cutting a hold part over its total length in a width less than the width of an existing living area structure with respect to the upper deck structure of the existing bulk ship and leveling up the cut upper deck structure to the required height. CONSTITUTION:When a bulk ship is modified so as to increase the volume in its cargo hold 1 in the direction of height of the ship, first an upper deck 4 of the cargo hold 1 and its top side tank 5 are vertically cut over the total length of a hold part narrower than width of an existing living area structure 10 further in a width wider than the width of hatch cover 7. While a partition 8, arranged between cargo holds, is cut in a horizontal line connecting bottom plates of the top side tank 5 cutting both ship sides. Next an upper deck structure, comprising an upper deck 4, top side tank 5 and the partition 8 in the vertically cut bulk ship, hatch coaming 6 on the upper deck 4 and the hatch cover 7 are leveled up to the required height being again welded integrally through a longitudinal wall 9 of the new ship body.
