PURPOSE:To decide the position of a body over a wide area by simple constitution by receiving object light from a scanning mirror which rotates at a constant speed by a photodetecting element array, calculating a distance, and deciding the object body to be detected according to distance information and direction information. CONSTITUTION:The object light reflected by the scanning mirror 1a of a scanning optical system 1 which rotates as a constant speed is passed through the condenser lens of a convergence optical system 1b and the detecting element array 3 where plural photodetecting elements are arrayed nearby the focus in an image moving direction. Then an adding means 4 inverts the detection outputs of adjacent photodetecting elements of the array 3 alternately and sums them up and an arithmetic means 5 calculates the distance from the scanning mirror to the object from the frequency of the sum. A state decision means makes a decision based on this distance information and the direction information corresponding to the angle of rotation of the scanning mirror 10 obtained by a direction detecting means 2 to decide the position of the body over a wide area by the simple constitution.
