PURPOSE:To allow roller bearing elements to exhibit satisfactory lubricating capacity over a long period by forming solid lubricating films of silver oxide on the surfaces of the elements. CONSTITUTION:Solid lubricating films consisting of silver (I) oxide and silver (II) oxide is formed on the surfaces of roller bearing elements. When the films are formed by ion plating with an arc discharge system, silver evaporated from an evaporating source 4 in a vacuum vessel 2 is ionized between a filament 6 and an electrode 8. The ionized silver is attracted to steel spheres 12 to be treated in a rotating mesh barrel 10 to form films on the surfaces of the spheres 12. The silver oxide films wear out at a lower speed than films of other solid lubricant such as lead and inhibit transfer unlike silver film. The silver oxide films are stable, have a long service life and exhibit superior lubricating capacity in case of bearing for special use in vacuum.
