Device making it possible to obtain stronger luminance, better homogeneity, and a reduction in the necessary electrical power. It comprises a light source emitting UV radiation, consisting of a quartz tube 1 bent at least once on its self in order to fill a parallelepipedal volume. This tube is placed in a housing 2 including reflecting faces. The assembly is surmounted by a transparent plate 3 coated with a fluorescent deposit 30 which is photoemissive in the visible spectrum under the influence of the UV radiation. The invention applies to the back-lighting of flat liquid-crystal visual display screens. <IMAGE>
