PURPOSE:To enable the presence or absence of a label adhered to the surface of a glass bottle regardless of the contents in the glass bottle, their materials and configurations by selecting the presence or absence of the label as a difference in a light transmittance in the thick wall portion of the glass bottle that is thick with respect to the incident light from an illuminator. CONSTITUTION:A label inspecting instrument 10 is composed of an illuminator 1, a television camera 3 and an image processor 4. The illuminator 1 is arranged as opposed to the camera 3. A glass bottle 2 carried by a conveyor is passed between the illuminator 1 and the camera 3. Incident light (a) from the illuminator 1 is irradiated on the bottle 2. Since the incident light (a) is hardly transmitted through the thick wall portion (b) of the bottle 2 when a label 5 is adhered to the surface of the bottle 2 and the incident light (a) is transmitted through the thick wall portion (b) when the label 5 is not adhered to the bottle 2, the presence or absence of the label 5 can be selected by the image processor 4. Accordingly, the presence or absence of the label can be easily and surely detected regardless of the configurations and materials of contents.
