PURPOSE:To improve the wear and seizing resistances of a base material by forming a surface layer contg. specified hard ceramic particles and silicon carbide fibers dispersed in an Ni or Ni-Co matrix. CONSTITUTION:An Ni layer 5c is deposited on a base material 5b by striking and a layer 5a contg. 5-30vol.% particles 22 of hard ceramics such as silicon carbide having 0.5-10mum particle size and 5-20vol.% silicon carbide fibers 23 having 0.5-2mum diameter and 10-200 aspect ratio in a matrix 21 of Ni or an Ni-Co alloy contg. <=40wt.% Co in a dispersed state is deposited on the layer 5c by plating to form a wear resistant surface layer. A wear resistant surface layer contg. the above-mentioned hard ceramic particles and silicon carbide fibers dispersed in a matrix consisting of 85-98pts.wt. Ni-Co alloy and 2-15pts.wt. P may be formed. Thus, the seizing and wear resistances of the base material 5b are improved, the extent of wear of the opposite material is reduced and the strength of the layer 5a is increased.
