PURPOSE:To rapidly melt and reduce a pellet and to progress the slagging of the same by charging the pellet little by little to a slag layer in the vicinity of an electrode under electrification at the time of refining stainless steel from semireduced chromium pellet in an electrical furnace. CONSTITUTION:The material for production of stainless steel composed mainly of steel scraps and slag forming material is at first charged to the arc type electrical furnace 2 and the electrode is electrified to melt the material. Molten pig 12 and the slag layer 13 are generated in the arc furnace 2, when the semireduced chromium pellet 6 in the high temp. state obtd. by pre-reduction in a solid phase reduction furnace is charged via a chute 4 to the slag layer 13 in the vicinity of the electrode 1 from an opening end for charging little by little by a batch method of continuous method. At this time, coke 10 and slag forming materials 11 (lime, etc.,) are charged via the chute 4 to said slag layer 13 as necessary. In this way, the semireduced pellet 9 is rapidly melted and reduced in the slag layer 13, by which the slagging thereof is progressed.
