Method for unalterably marking several colours on a solid support. It involves the use of a support consisting of superimposed layers of different colours and consists essentially in forming pits of greater or lesser size in the support, their depth being so selected as to reveal locally a subjacent layer whose colour is similar to or related to that colour which is to be represented. It is possible, by making several different layers visible by means of sufficiently fine juxtaposition of pits of different depths and in an appropriate distribution, to produce a great number of intermediate colours by visual synthesis.
