The invention relates to a device making it possible to make an emergency stop in a runaway vehicle following breakage or failure of its conventional braking device. This device is made up of 2 assemblies placed on each side of the vehicle, within the space of the rear track of the latter, upstream of the back axle or axles of the lorry or of the trailer if it involves a semitrailer vehicle. Each assembly comprises a trough 1 articulated at one end between 2 crevices 6, resting at the other end on a withdrawable plinth 7. The trough 1 stores a rubber strip with a metal carcass 2 equipped at one end with a transverse axis 4 with guide bogeys passing inside a tube 3 integral with the strip. In the horizontal position of the trough, the guide bogeys are held between the locking catches 8 and the leaf springs 9. When the command for withdrawing the pin is given from the cab the troughs tilt, the bogeys of each strip are released from the catches 8 under the action of the springs 9, the strips are thrown under the tyres which are rotationally immobilised, no longer being in contact with the road. The rubber strips, immobilised by the bogeys blocked at the end of the trough drag on the road and stop the vehicle. <IMAGE>
