PURPOSE:To improve the formability and corrosion resistance of a surface treated steel sheet for DI cans by tinning one side of a steel sheet for DI cans corresponding to the outsides of the cans by a specified amt. and by plating the other side corresponding to the insides with Al by a specified amt. Herein DI means drawing and ironing. CONSTITUTION:One side of a steel sheet for DI cans corresponding to the outsides of the cans is tinned by 0.5-12g/m<2> by electrolytic tinning or other method and the other side corresponding to the insides is plated with Al by 0.2-50g/m<2> by electroplating or other method. The resulting surface treated steel sheet for DI cans ensures formability comparable to that of conventional tin plate and satisfactory corrosion resistance is provided to the inside of the steel sheet by a single coating. The steel sheet exhibits satisfactory corrosion resistance to contents such as carbonated drinks and beer.
