PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of information of a full-white line and to improve the efficiency of the use of a memory by representing the full-white line by means of prescribed white run length codes and a row-end code when coding an image signal by using a run length code. CONSTITUTION:A control part 10 controls the coding and decoding of a transmission/reception image data and the overall action of the titled system. An image reader part 11 read an image on an original, and an image recorder part 12 stores a received image. A ROM 13 stores a control program, while an image memory 14 records an image data transmitted or received. A modem 18 executes the modulation/demodulation of an image signal and a procedure signal, and is connected to a communication line N via an NCU 17 for purpose of line control. In case of transmitting a full-white line, when a terminate code of white-two, it is represented by a full-white line '0111' and an EOL code. Despite a conventional full-white line needs an information quantity of seventeen bits, the quantity can be reduced down to approximately one fourth with this system.
