PURPOSE:To remove a faulty bit without stopping the operation of a system by correcting data in an existing storage element where a fixed single-bit fault occurs and storing it in a stand-by storage element. CONSTITUTION:When the fixed single-bit fault occurs to a storage element 1-1, a controller reads data out of the entire address space of the storage element 1-1. In this reading operation, information of all storage elements 1-i are sent out to the control part through corresponding selecting circuits 7-1. the read data are corrected by an error detection and correction system and inputted to terminal 2-1 again together with added error correction codes. Then the controller supplies a control signal to a terminal 12 so that the data inputted to the terminal 2-1 again are inputted selectively to stand-by storage elements 1-N+1. Consequently, the data which are inputted from the terminal 2-1 are corrected and written in the stand-by storage element 1-N+1.
