PURPOSE:To inexpensively manufacture high purity alkali metal thiocianate by adding a specific alkali metal compound, calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide in a desulfurization effluent from a coke oven and heating therewith. CONSTITUTION:At least one of alkali metal compound in an alkali metal hydroxide carbonate and hydrogen carbonate, calcium hydroxide and/or calcium oxide are added in a desulfurization effluent by means of an aqueous ammonia of a coke oven, and heated therewith. Subsequently, a produced precipitate is separated and eliminated to obtain the alkali metal thiocianate solution. Generally, the desulfurization effluent to be employed is obtained from a wet desulfurization process of the coke oven gas by the aqueous ammonia in which a naphthoquinone picratesulfonate and an anthraquinone-sulfonate are used as catalysts.
