PURPOSE:To remove a feeling of unmatching perceived by the entire expression by providing a means to add an attribute to a character string constituting an expression as an expression mode, a means to identify an expression mode based on the attribute and a means to widen a character printing pitch for a symbolic character and characters other than the symbolic character positioned adjacent to the symbolic character. CONSTITUTION:An expression mode as an expression is added to a character string which signifies an expression, as an attribute by an expression attribute addition means. Then when the expression mode is read from a line buffer 18 to print characters on a character string basis, the mode is identified by an identification means as an ordinary document or an expression mode. If it is the expression mode, the characters are printed with the pitch between a symbolic character and others than the symbolic character widened. That is, the attributes to designate the head and end characters as a start and an end point of character printing respectively are added to the characters 'sinaxdx' sandwiched between the symbol 'S' and '=', and said characters are centered between points 56 and 57.
