Prodn. of fluoroformates of formula (I) is effected by reacting a carbonate ester of formula (II) with a fluoride (III) in the presence of a cryptate, a linear or cyclic polyether or a polar aprotic solvent at 20-120 deg.C with continuous removal of (I) and/or by-produced aldehyde from the reaction mixt. as they are formed. R1 = an opt. substd. satd. or unsatd. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or polycyclic gp., an opt. substd. araliphatic gp. or an atomatic gp.; R2 = H, 1-12C alkyl, opt. unsatd. 5-12C cycloalkyl (opt. substd. by one or more halogen atoms) or aryl opt. substd. by one or more halogen atoms. (III) is an alkali(ne earth) metal fluoride, R3R4R5R6N+F- (R3-R6 = H, 1-12C alkyl or aralkyl), KHF2, NH4HF2 or KSO2F.
