An adjustable electrical resistor is provided, in particular for use in a circuit for switching electrical loads, which resistor has a pair of planar electrodes which are arranged at a particular separation from each other, are provided with connection contacts and can be moved relative to one another, an elastic and electrically conducting resistor foam with coarse pores being arranged between the electrodes with only limited distortion, which foam contacts the electrodes over a contact area F, but when the electrodes are brought closer together, contacts the latter with deformation over an increasing contact area with the result of alteration of the resistance.
