The apparatus has a conventional one-dimensional or two-dimensional array of composite radiation detecting units each having a radiation sensor 1 connected to a signal processing circuit on a semiconductor plate 3. A common circuit board 5 provides the output leads. Pipes 6 supplied with liquid coolant enable the heat generated in the signal processing circuits to be dissipated. Thermally-conductive plates 4 provide a path for the heat to reach the cooling pipes 6. Other cooling systems use porous-walled piping supplied with a gaseous coolant.
