NEW MATERIAL:Carboxylic acids expressed by formula I [R is 4-34C straight or branched chain alkyl or alkenyl; at least one of X1 and X2 is -CH2CH2COOM (M is H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium lower alkanolamine cation, lower alkylamine cation or basic amino acid cation)]. EXAMPLE:A compound expressed by formula I (R is n-C10H21; X1 is H; X2 is -CH2CH2COOH). USE:A surfactant. PREPARATION:For example, a 1,2-dialkanediol expressed by formula II is reacted with acrylonitrile, acrylic acid or a lower alkyl acrylate and the reaction product, as necessary, is hydrolyzed to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
