The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for generating a control signal dependent on the oxygen content in gases. There is provided a measuring sensor having an oxygen-ion-conducting solid electrolyte body, a reference electrode and a measuring electrode exposed to the gas. In a reference gas space (5) sealed from the atmosphere in a gastight manner and arranged on the reference electrode (4), an oxygen partial pressure is set by means of a metal/metal oxide mixture or by means of a mixture of a plurality of metal oxides. To the potential on the electrodes is added an external offset voltage, the value of which lies between 50 and 150% of the absolute value of that potential of the measuring sensor (1) which arises in the more oxygen-rich region of the characteristic curve of the measuring sensor (1) on feeding in oxygen from outside the measuring electrode (3). <IMAGE>
