The invention relates to thermoplastic, aliphatic polyamides with a low degree of branching which have been prepared by hydrolytic polycondensation of polyamide-forming, aliphatic diamine/dicarboxylic acid mixtures, optionally with lactams or specific amino acids, in the presence of small amounts of alpha -amino- epsilon -caprolactam.
