In a motor vehicle brake system with slip control, the pressure of a tandem master cylinder (1) is in normal cases, when no slip occurs, fed by way of a main valve arrangement (7), automatically reversible as a function of the occurrence of a slip, to two diagonal brake circuits and, when a slip occurs, the pressure of a pressure source (23) is fed at least to the brake circuit(s) causing a slip by way of a pressure modulation valve arrangement (26). In order to shorten the braking distance in the event of all wheels not being locked, it is proposed that, in the event of slip occurring, the main valve arrangement (7) cause the diagonal brake circuits to be switched over to three brake circuits, of which the one is assigned solely to the rear wheel brakes (15, 16) and the others are each respectively assigned solely to one of the front wheel brakes (13, 14). <IMAGE>
