PURPOSE:To realize the accurate conversion of character strings between different languages with a simple operation by retrieving the address of a character string of another language dictionary having the same number as that of a character string retrieved by a certain language dictionary with use of a cross- retrieving dictionary and displaying the character string included in said address on a display device. CONSTITUTION:A cross-retrieving dictionary 2 stores the addresses of each language dictionary of a relevant character string set opposite to each character string. The character string supplied from an input device 3 is stored in a memory 4 and a character string equal to the stored one is retrieved by a language dictionary 1 of the language of said character string. Then the address of the character string of another language dictionary 1 having a number equal to that of the retrieved character string is retrieved out of the dictionary 2 by a processor. Then the character string included in said address is displayed on a display device 6. Thus a character string in a sentence can be simply and accurately converted into a character string of another language having the same meaning with no external input of a character string of another language having the same meaning as the character string in a sentence.
