PURPOSE:To increase the amt. of water absorption and to increase the water absorbing rate by using the reaction product of a resin having a nitrile group, an amino compd. having a primary or secondary amino group, and water as the title high molecular water absorbent. CONSTITUTION:The resin having a nitrile group, the amino compd. having a primary or secondary amino group, and water are allowed to react with each other in the self solvent or in the presence of a solvent such as methanol, ethanol and formamide at 80-170 deg.C for 0.5-24hr to produce the high molecular water absorbent. The polymer of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, etc., is appropri ately used as the resin having a nitrile group. Besides, ammonia, ethylenediamine, diethylenedimaine, tetraethylenepentamine, hexamethylenedia mine, etc., are adequately used as the primary or secondary amino compd.
