PURPOSE:To discriminate and display a particle size of soil accurately, by discriminating the particle size of soil from a relationship between an cumulative amplitude of output siganl waveforms from a vibration sensor built into a rod for exploration and a penetration resistance from a load sensor. CONSTITUTION:A vibration sensor 2 and a load sensor 3 are built near the tip of a rod 1 for exploration and penetrated into soil with a penetrating device 6 such as of a hydraulic cylinder. Vibration generated in the penetration of the rod 1 into soil is detected with an acceleration sensor as vibration sensor 2 to be converted into a waveform characteristic value by a waveform characteristic value conversion means (a) in a processor 7, and amplitude of a hourly variations in an effective value of the waveform characteristic value is integrated by a cumulative amplitude computing means (b). Then, a computing means (c) discriminates the particle size of soil from a relationship between a penetration resistance from the load sensor 3 and the cumulative amplitude from the means (b) to be shown on a display device (d).
