PURPOSE:To easily retrieve the documents by using an area dividing device which divides a document image into a drawing area and a sentence area, a drawing recognizing device which converts a pattern in the drawing area into a graphic code string, and a character recognizing device which converts a character string in the sentence area into a character code string. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with an area dividing device 9 which divides a document image into a drawing area and a sentence area, a drawing recognizing device 11 which converts a pattern in the drawing area into a graphic code string, and a character recognizing device 10 which converts a character string in the sentence area into a character code string. In other words, a document image is divided into a drawing area and a sentence area and these divided patterns are converted into the graphic code strings. At the same time, a character string in the sentence area is converted into a character code string. Thus the retrieving instructions are given in sentences and patterns and therefore a desired document is retrieve easily and surely with no strict designation of a key word.
