PURPOSE:To read the flaws, etc., of a transfer belt so as to prevent a malfunction and to reduce chromatic aberration by previously detecting one circle of the transfer belt before a pattern for measurement is detected. CONSTITUTION:The counting of a timer is started by setting a time when the joint of the transfer belt 21 passes a sensor 27 and an output from the sensor 27 which is high level for a certain time becomes low level as a reference. And the value of the counter at the time when one circle of the transfer belt is detected and the output from the sensor 27 becomes high level is stored in a RAM, etc. The position of the flaw is discriminated, thus, and each color write timing signal is generated in a timing in which the flaw does not exist in measurement pattern images 28BK, C, M and Y. Thus, the malfunction caused by the flaw, etc., of the transfer belt can be prevented and the color staggers can be reduced.
