PURPOSE:To enable the most suitable cooling and heating operation to be carried out by a method wherein a cooling mode and a heating mode are changed over when a temperature of air conditioned room is moved away from a desired set temperature by a desired temperature range or more and this temperature is kept for a desired period of time or when the temperature of the air conditioned room is substantially moved away from the desired temperature range. CONSTITUTION:Under an automatic mode setting, if a compressor 1 is being operated, either a cooling operation or a heating operation is carried out as its is. If the compressor is stopped, a time counting of a timer is started. Then, when a temperature (t) of an air conditioned room is (a predetermined value T) + 30 or more, a cooling mode is set. Also, in case that the temperature (t) of the air conditioned room is higher than T+1.5 and the timer is timed UP, the cooling mode is similarly set. When the temperature (t) is less than T-3.0, a heating mode is set irrespective of the present operating mode. When the temperature (t) is less than T-1.5 and the timer is timed UP, the heating mode is also set. The timer may reset or start to operate when a compressor is changed over between ON and OFF and a counting time of this timer is set to about 1hr.
