PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composite material having improved heat- resistance, strength and thermal conductivity, by using Al nitride as a principal phase and an Ni-Al intermetallic compound as a subsidiary phase and restricting contents of Ni and impurity oxygen within specific ranges. CONSTITUTION:A molded article is produced by mixing Al nitride powder having an impurity oxygen content of <=7wt.% and an average particle diameter of 0.05-5mum with <=20wt.% of an Ni compound in terms of Ni element. As an alternative method, a sintered article having an Ni content of <=20wt.%, containing AlN as a principal phase and containing (Ni-Al-O) compound and/or (Ni-O) compound phase is prepared beforehand. The article is calcined by heating at 1,650-2,050 deg.C in N2 gas atmosphere for >=3hr. A composite material containing AlN as a principal phase and an Ni-Al intermetallic compound as a subsidiary phase can be produced by this process. Since the Ni content and impurity oxygen content are restricted to <=20wt.% and <=8,000ppm, respectively, the obtained composite material has improved heat-resistance and thermal conductivity.
