PURPOSE:To measure the thickness and temperature of the layer of a medium at the same time by allowing a transmitter-receiver itself and a receiver to an ultrasonic wave that the transmitter-receiver sends out, and using the propagation times to the reception by them and distance data. CONSTITUTION:Reflected waves from a point B which are received by the transmitter receiver 1 and receiver 2 are amplified and detected by amplifying circuits 51 and 52, sent and shaped by pulse shaping circuits 61 and 62, and led to timers 71 and 72. The timers 71 and 72 start counting up in synchronism with a trigger pulse from a transmitting trigger 3 and keep on counting up until said shaped pulses are sent thereto. A CPU 8 inputs their counting results and uses a conversion table of the sound speed and temperature for the medium which is written previously in a ROM 9 to operate and display the thickness (d) and temperature of the medium on display devices 10 and 11.
