PURPOSE:To detect a border by using image information on a wide range in the lengthwise direction of the border by setting the number of picture elements to be processed which are arranged in the lengthwise direction of the border larger than the number of picture elements to be processed which are arranged in the direction crossing the border at right angles. CONSTITUTION:An unmoved place B is seen darker than a mowed place C, so when the border L1 is detected, the image range of an object of processing is limited to a laterally long area and the number of picture elements to be processed which are arranged in the lengthwise direction of the border L1 is set larger than the number of picture elements to be processed which are arranged in the direction crossing the border L1 at right angles. The integral value of nine picture elements, i.e. a picture element (e) to be processed and its eight peripheral picture elements (a-d and f-i) is operated as to brightness variation in the X-axial direction on an image. Then such picture elements that the absolute value of the integral value is larger than a set threshold value, namely, that the brightness variation is maximum are extracted to find the straight line corresponding to the border L1 between the unmowed place B and mowed place C.
