PURPOSE:To allow the frequency characteristic of an FM luminance signal to be suitable and to prevent the deterioration of a picture quality by increasing a recording current and changing a frequency modulating carrier frequency at the time of overrecording. CONSTITUTION:At the time of overrecording, the FM modulating carrier frequency of a frequency modulator 2 is set lower than the usual recording time by an overrecording control signal supplied from an input terminal 7 and a switch 6 is switched to a (b) side. After the output signal of a mixer 4 is amplified by an amplifier 5, it is supplied through a recording amplifier 8, at this time, the recording current flowing to the recording head 9 is increased more than the usual recording time by the amplifier 5, the recording current is close optimumly to the FM carrier frequency, the reduction due to the recording current increase in the FM carrier is decreased, and the collapse of the balance of the FM carrier and the side band is suppressed.
