PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered beta-SiC having high strength, by mixing SiC powder having high beta-SiC content with B or B carbide and a carbonaceous additive in a solvent capable of dissolving said additive, drying and forming the mixture, calcining the product while exhausting generated gas and sintering the calcined material under the introduction of Ar gas. CONSTITUTION:SiC powder having an average particle diameter of <=1mum and containing >=90wt.% of beta-SiC is mixed with 0.3-1.1wt.% of B or B carbide (in terms of B) having an average particle diameter of <=0.5mum and 2-3wt.% of a carbonaceous additive (in terms of C). The carbonaceous additive is e.g. a phenolic resin. The mixture is mixed in a solvent capable of dissolving said carbonaceous additive (e.g. alcohol), dried and molded. The molded product is calcined in vacuum by raising the temperature up to 1,500 deg.C to carbonize the carbonaceous additive and exhaust the generated gas. The calcined product is sintered at 1,960-2,100 deg.C under introduction of Ar gas. A sintered SiC having high strength can be efficiently produced on an industrial scale at a low cost. |
