PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a curing agent for epoxy resin, etc., in high purity in colorless state, by reacting styrene with maleic anhydride using an aromatic amine selected from 5,10-dihydrophenazine compounds, phenoxazine compounds, etc., as a polymerization inhibitor. CONSTITUTION:A tetrabasic acid anhydride of formula is produced by the addition reaction of a styrene compound with maleic anhydride using a polymerization inhibitor consisting of an aromatic amine selected from 5,10- dihydrophenazine compounds, phenoxazine compounds and iminostilbene (5H- dibenzo[b,f]azepine) compounds. The amount of the inhibitor is preferably about 0.05-5wt.% based on the stoichiometric amount of produced tetrabasic acid anhydride. The reaction easily proceeds by an extremely simple operation comprising the mixing of raw materials. The product is useful as a raw material for polyimide resin and polyester resin.
