PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered ceramic composition of lead titanate zirconate having oriented crystal axis, by uniaxially pressing hydrated TiO2 fibers and sintering the obtained formed product having oriented crystal axis in the presence of oxide and hydroxide of Pb and Zr. CONSTITUTION:Hydrated TiO2 fibers produced by removing potassium from potassium titanate fibers are uniaxially pressed to obtain a formed article consisting of said fibers in two-dimensionally oriented state. The formed article is heated at >=900 deg.C in the presence of lead hydroxide and zirconium hydroxide to effect the reaction of the hydrated TiO2 with lead hydroxide and zirconium hydroxide to form lead titanate zirconate (PZT) and the product is sintered as a whole to form the objective sintered ceramic material of PZT. Dielectric strength in the polarization treatment of an element can be improved by the presence of manganese oxide in the sintered material and, accordingly, manganese nitrate is preferably added to the composition of the present invention. The PZT sintered ceramic material of the present invention has excellent dielectric characteristics and piezoelectric properties.
