PURPOSE:To contrive prevention of occurrence of bubbles in glass, by impregnating the surface of a wet gel obtained from an alkoxide with an aqueous solution of an Al or Ti salt or hydrolyzate solution thereof, drying and sintering the impregnated surface. CONSTITUTION:A solution consisting essentially of an alkoxide is hydrolyzed to form a sol, which is subsequently gelatinized to afford a wet gel. The surface of the resultant wet gel is then sufficiently impregnated with an aqueous solution of an Al or Ti salt or hydrolyzate solution of an alkoxide thereof, dried and then sintered. Since the Al or Ti in the form the aqueous solution of the salt or alkoxide is added to the surface and impregnated thereinto, filling of pores on the gel surface can be delayed. Thereby bubbles in the glass are pushed to the outside and the filling of pores is completed to prevent the occurrence of bubbles in the glass.
