PURPOSE:To stop a microfilm or the like at the center of a mark, however size it may be, by detecting the mark of the microfilm by a detecting means, and counting the mark to automatically retrieve desired information on the microfilm. CONSTITUTION:A measuring means (encoder) 6 which measures the extent of movement of an information recording medium (microfilm) F is provided, and the extent of movement is measured by the encoder 6 while a detecting means 5 detects the mark of a desired picture frame 15, and the moving direction of the microfilm F is inverted at the time of terminating detection of the mark of the desired picture frame and the microfilm F is transported by a half extent of movement and is stopped. Thus, the microfilm F where centers of picture frames and those of marks coincide with each other is stopped at the center of the mark, however size it may be.
