PURPOSE:To obtain a waterproof material preventing metal ion-contg. water such as seawater from penetration, by forming a film of water-absorptive polymer from water-soluble polyalkylene oxide polyol, etc. on the surface of a substrate consisting of putrefaction-retardant polymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective waterproof material preventing optical fiber cables from water penetration can be obtained by forming on the surface of a substrate consisting of a putrefaction-retardant polymer, >=5wt.% of a film of water-insoluble and water-absorptive polymer made up of a reaction product from (A) a water-soluble polyalkylene oxide polyol having two or more hydroxyl groups with an average molecular weight >=4,000, (B) 1-20wt.% of a compound having two or more hydroxyl and/or amino groups (e.g., neopentyl glycol) and (C) 1-15wt.% of a polyisocyanate compound (based on the components A+B).
