An explosive composition consists essentially of a nitroparaffin and a sensitizer therefor selected from the group consisting of alkyleneimines, monoarylalkyleneamines, monoethanolamine, alkylphosphorous amides, alkylenephosphorous amides, aryldiamines, aminopyridines, N,N1 - diethyl - p - phenylenediamine, hydrazine, hydrazine compounds, and alkylarylenediamines. Preferably the sensitizer comprises 0.5 to 20% by weight of the composition. Results are given of detonation tests on nitromethane compositions containing as a sensitizer hydrazine, N,N-dimethyl hydrazine, ethyleneimine, hexamethyl phosphorous triamide, monoethanolamine, N,N1 - diethyl - p - phenylene diamine, benzylamine, 2,4-diaminotoluene, and 2,6-diaminopyridine. In some of these tests the composition has been previously leached with water or sodium chloride solution. Other sensitizers are listed. In addition to nitromethane, nitroparaffins specified are 1- or 2-nitropropane, sym. dinitroethane, 1,3-dinitropropane, 1,1,3-trinitrobutane, mononitroethane, and 1,1,2-trinitroethane. Sawdust, starch, or powdered coal or carbon may be added as a filler. |
