FERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOSITION

摘要

PURPOSE:To provide a titled compsn. which has excellent optical characteristics and is suitable for mass production by mixing ferroelectric liquid crystal compds. or compsns. in which the spiral pitch of the cholesteric phase and the spiral pitch of the chiral smectic C phase are different from each other. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal compsn. in which the smectic A phase exists at the temp. higher than the temp. to allow existence of the chiral smectic C phase and the cholesteric phase exists at the further higher temp. is used. The spiral pitch of the cholesteric phase of the liquid crystal compsn. increases to infinity or to an extremely large length near the temp. at which the compsn. transfers from the cholesteric phase to the smectic A phase. The adverse influence that the spiral structure in the cholesteric phase exerts to the orientation of the smectic A phase and the chiral smectic C phase at the time of orienting the liquid crystal compsn. by slowly cooling the cell is thereby eliminated and the orientation of the smectic A phase and the chiral smectic C phase is improved. The stable orientation is assured even if the cell-spacing is thick by increasing the spiral pitch of the chiral smectic C phase to the infinity or the extremely large length.
