PURPOSE:To know in a short time a fact that an object file does not exist on a volume of device, by executing a search until a final effective label position on a VTOC at the time of searching a file label on the VTOC. CONSTITUTION:A final effective label position holding means 5 executes a file allocation processing of a file allocate/deallocate utility program 4, a file is allocated in a disk device 6, and in the rear of a final effective level position of a VTOC which is held at present, a label position in which a file label is allocated is held as a final effective label position. On the other hand, when the final effective label is eliminated, its previous effective label position is held as the final effective label position. At the time of searching the file label on the VTOC, a VTOC search means 3 does not search the whole VTOC but executes the search until the final effective label position on the VTOC.
