By combusting fuel and oxidant gas, thereby producing furnace gas, at least one jet of oxidant gas, selected from oxygenenriched air and oxygen, and one fuel jet are injected into the furnace. In oder to maintain a given temperature, the furnace is fired using alternating high and low firing rate periods. The low firing rate period is characterized by injection into the furnace of fuel and oxident at a flow rate such that substantial leakage of air into the furnace is caused to occur followed by a high firing rate period characterized by injection into the furnace of fuel and oxidant at high flow rates.
