PURPOSE:To perform printing while automatically changing the printing color with regard to specific printing data, by counting the number of characters with regard to a predetermined range of printing data by a character set and comparing the magnitude relation between the counting results to set the printing color of a character by the character set. CONSTITUTION:A character set indicating code is discriminated among the document data from the host computer to judge a kind. The printing position of each character is determined corresponding to the attribute of a character due to the character code and the control of the printing position due to a control code. Then, the positionally determined character code data is developed at the corresponding position of a page buffer 4. In the first printing process, the character pattern of the character set used in the largest number of characters is read from the first dot pattern memory 6 and, for example, black printing is performed. In the next second printing process, the character pattern of the character set used in other characters is read from the second pattern memory 7 and, for example, red printing is performed.
