PURPOSE:To obtain an image capable of detecting even the change to a morbid state under a mucous membrane, by performing intracorporeal illumination and extracorporeal illumination during one frame or one field period and reading the images picked up under the respective illuminations. CONSTITUTION:An endoscopic apparatus 1 is constituted of an electronic endoscope 2, an endoscope control apparatus 6 having an extracorporeal light source part 5 provided thereto and a monitor 7 displaying an endoscopic image. The CCD 25 of the electronic endoscope 2 inserted in the body cavity performs reading and transmission by a driver 26 in synchronous relation to the clock generator 31 or 32 selected by a switch circuit 33. The first clock generator 31 performs general reading and transmission once per one field or one frame only at the time of intracorporeal illumination or at the time of extracorporeal illumination to obtain the image due to the intracorporeal or extracorporeal illumination. Next, when the second clock generator 32 is selected by a change- over signal, the intracorporeal and extracorporeal illuminations are performed in a time sharing manner. Therefore, by applying image processing to two kinds of images different in data when necessary, the image suitable for detecting a change to a morbid state can be obtained within a short time.
