PURPOSE:To attain reduction without reducing the information quantity of an original pattern and to prevent the visibility of the pattern from being damaged even after reduction by reducing and recording the binary two-dimensional pattern of black and white in a half tone. CONSTITUTION:A titled device consists of a document arrangement data memory 1, a character pattern generation part 2, a conversion part for half tone 3, a system controller 4, a half tone print control part 5, a printing mechanism 6, a thermal head 7 and a mechanism control part 8. As to the one dimensional direction of the two dimensional pattern due to binary information of black and white, it is compressed into half tone information so as to reduce the number of picture elements, and as to the other one-dimensional direction, the whole pattern is reduced and recorded by the combination of the reduction of a recording position interval at the time of recording and a simple processing into half tone information. Thus, the pattern can be reduced and recorded without reducing an information quantity, and a reduced record with a satisfactory printing quality can be obtained.
