PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of an electronic endoscope and to facilitate its assembly by providing a self-converging rod lens to at least part of an image formation optical system and arranging the photodetection surface of a solid- state image pickup element on its image formation surface. CONSTITUTION:Reflected light from an object is made incident on the self- converging rod lens 35 at the tip part 20 of the electronic endoscope and converged on the photodetection surface 36a of the solid-state image pickup element 36. Its output signal is sent to a control part through a signal cable 38 and an image is displayed. Then tip part 20 is equipped with a columnar tip part main body 31 made of metal, etc., and the main body 31 is provided with a through hole 32 for observation and a through-hole 34 for a processing tool. The through hole 32 has a small-diameter part 32a and a large-diameter part 32b, a rod lens 35 is mounted on the small-diameter part 32a, and an element 36 is joined with its rear end surface 36. A signal cable 38 is connected to the element 36. Further, a channel pipe 43 is mounted in the through-hole 34, a processing tool channel tube 45 is mounted on the end part of the pipe 43, and a feed water nozzle 47 is connected to the side of the through-hole 32.
